Subproject B7: Stellar Census and Kinematic Structures in the Solar Neighborhood

We want to complete the census of nearby stars and investigate the kinematic structure of the extended solar neighbourhood using large surveys such as Gaia, Pan-STARRS1 and CARMENES. Considering stars with distances up to 20 – 25 pc, we can define a truly volume-limited and thus kinematically and otherwise unbiased sample, for which we will determine fundamental properties such as the stellar luminosity function and mass density. Moreover, we will characterize the kinematic structure of the Solar neighborhood out to 500 pc by searching for groups of co-moving stars. Using Gaia and other surveys, we will determine their spatial structure and origin, improving the understanding of the solar neighbourhood composition as part of the Milky Way.
